Test Results

Brayden had his swallow study done this morning. We found out that he was silently aspirating on the regular formula (without thick-it) and could aspirate on the nectar consistency formula so he was bumped up to honey consistency formula (it looks like elmers glue!). Thank you all for praying for him!! I was so proud, he didn't cry at all! He just stared at the radiology tech the entire time and let them put different bottles in his mouth. He didn't make a peep!

Annnnnnnnnd, he got bumped up to 4 bottles a day! We are halfway there! Once he can take 75% of each bottle I think they'll move him up to 8 bottles a day, and once he can take 75% of each of those for 24-48 hours we should get to come home (if I am understanding that correctly).

Daddy usually gives him his bottles, but tonight at 8pm I gave him his bottle and he took almost 75% (44ml's)! He did so good!

They had us bring in our carseat (they always inspect them before you can leave) and gave us a bunch of booklets on going home, so I am thinking that the end is finally in sight!
Since we have been down here so many of you have seen me out and about (usually at the hospital) and have come up to say hi! Thank you so much - that means so much to us! I know it can be hard to approach someone when you aren't sure if they are really who you think they are, but I am so glad you did!
Thank you all so much for your prayers, they are working!

I bet Brayden gets a car seat trial. That is where they put the baby in the car seat for a set period of time (based on distance to home, etc) and make sure there are no problems. It is a great time for pictures!
I am glad he did great with the tests today. Hopefully he will be ready to come home soon!

Bless his little heart! Glad you learned some things with the swallow test and that he's eating better. You look like such a natural feeding him. That light is shining at the end of the tunnel! Meanwhile, prayers continue.....

As the mother of an NICU baby I know how hard it is to wait for them to come home. My daughter was a 32 weeker and we were told to expect her to come home about her due date. just thinking about being there 8 weeks was mind boggling. I hope your little guy comes home soon and it's good to hear the doctors figures out what was going on.

That is good news. It is great to get the "light at the end of the tunnel" in vision. Honey consistancy is pretty nasty, but if it keeps him from aspirating, then who cares!!!! My twins were at NICU at Baptist and they made us bring our carseat in too. In fact since they were preemies, they had to pass a carseat test of 90 long. Hopefully he will get to skip that part. Do make sure you trade off feeding him because they do adapt to their favorite and will end up not taking a bottle from anyone else if it is always given by the same person. My husband and I did that when we were trying to get our girls discharged from the NICU. They didn't do a swallow study to see that my daughters were aspirating. They just told us that they had to be clear of heart rate drops for 48 hrs before dischaging. I knew pretty good of how to keep one of our daughters from heart rate dropping while she was eating so I fed every time at the end so she could go home, then once we got home she wouldn't take a bottle from my husband and my other twin daughter who was always fed by my husband wouldn't take a bottle from me. So make sure you trade off so he won't get use to one person. I am still praying for you and your family.

Looks like going home is going to be a reality soon!!! My son, too, silent aspirated. The thickening gel is so much nicer than the powder. Simply Thick or Hydra-aid are the companies we use. There is also a home recipe, but my son knows when I use that over the manufactured stuff. FYI. God bless.

Hope that your prayers are answered and Brayden is home soon. Not sure if this would help, but when my daughter was born, her mouth was so little that she choked on regular bottle nipples because she had such little features. She was not a preemie, she was born at 38 weeks at 6 lbs 4oz. We bought bottles with nipples that were made for Preemies. The only place we could find them was at Target. I think Gerber made them, it has been 7 years. Not sure if the NICU will let you try this or I am sure they are much more knowledgeable then me but thought I would pass it along.
